Samburu National Reserve

A place of endless skies, dust-red plains and palm-fringed rivers, Samburu National Reserve lies on the fringes of the vast and arid desert once known as the Northern Frontier District, whose heat-scorched scrublands extend all the way to the jade-green waters of Lake Turkana and beyond. Physically dramatic, the 104 sq kilometre landscape of the Reserve features rocky battlements, craggy scarps, dry river beds and fallen boulders rising out of the thorn scrub against a backdrop of the far-distant hills and the great red table mountain known as Lololokwi. As for wildlife, Samburu provides one of the few sanctuaries in Kenya for the endangered Grevy’s zebra, the rare beisa oryx and the blue-shanked Somali ostrich whilst large herds of elephant roam the gaunt hills during the day before returning to bathe on the banks of the river in the evening. Over 450 species of birds are available in this sanctuary. Lunch at your lodge will be followed by an afternoon game drive in this small game-filled Park returning at dusk for dinner and overnight at Sarova Lion Hill/ Lk. Nakuru Lodge

The landscape surrounding Lake Nakuru includes areas of marsh and grasslands alternating with rocky cliffs and outcrops, stretches of acacia woodland and rocky hillsides covered with a euphorbia forest on the eastern perimeter.

Lake Nakuru National Park is also home to the Kenyan Rhino Conservation Project - and so is an excellent place to see rhino. The best view of the lake is from Baboon Cliffs. Late afternoon game drive in the reserve – home to the “Big Five”elephant, lion, leopard, buffalo and rhino as well as cheetah, zebra, giraffe, wildebeest, hippo, impala, gazelle and numerous other wildlife including many hundreds of species of birds. Return to your Lodge at sundown for Dinner & Overnight.

You spend the next six nights/ 7 days exploring this incredible, species rich reserve-with a taste of top luxury rated accommodations.

The Masai Mara is the Jewel in the Crown of East Africa, forever to be associated with vast numbers of game - the greatest wildlife experience of all. Year round the Masai Mara Reserve is host to an enormous concentration of animals, boosted by the famous wildebeest and zebra migration during July/August/October. All the Big Cats, Elephant, Black Rhino and thousands of plains game spread out before you - it's better than the Discovery Channel because you are part of the spectacle. The birds are fantastic - from the giant Martial Eagle, to the ground Hornbill and a myriad of other diverse species.

The Mara is undoubtedly Hollywood Africa, grass plains interspersed with Migunga and Croton thickets, rolling hills and small kopjes, islands in the sea of grass abound. Small rivers feed massive fig trees on their banks. This is the northernmost extension of the Serengeti ecosystem and is a microhabitat in its own right.

Here during the months of July to December you witness the spectacle of the migration of a million and a half Wildebeest and Zebra, with all their attendant carnivores, Lion, Leopard, Cheetah, Hyena and possibly Wild Dog. The rest of the year is no less exciting as the Lion and Leopard remain resident and are commonly seen hunting plains game that include Thompson and Grants Gazelle, Coke's Hartebeest, Topi, Eland, Waterbuck, great herds of Wildebeest and groups of the chestnut coated Impala.  (B, L, D)

Full days in the Mara with game drives (an early morning game drive and a late afternoon game drive – each of approx. 3 hrs), all meals and overnight as above (on this day, you may opt to take a balloon ride in the morning followed by a Champagne breakfast (as opposed to a game drive), an unforgettable experience at an extra cost! Possible too is a visit to a Maasai Village (Manyatta) in between the two game drives – optional at an extra minimal charge)
